Title: The Girl Guide
Paperback: 224 pages
The Girl Guide is a stylish book for young girls becoming women,
who need not feel alone on their journey to womanhood. Contained
within these pages are 50 lessons, anecdotes and stories written by Marawa Ibrahim, a nine-times world record breaking hula-hoop circus performer.
I made over 200 illustrations, photo-illustrations and props to represent difficult topics (such as periods, growing pubic hair etc) in a playful and fun way. Being a book all about the body and from Marawa’s own experiences during puberty, I directed Marawa to make a typeface out of her body. This became the identity of the book on the cover and a few pages inside the book were typeset with it to illustrate bold quotes and make fun page numbers.
Illustrations, Photo-illustrations, Props, Art Direction, Book Design and Typography by Sinem Erkas.
All photographs with models in were taken by fashion photographer Jo Duck, art directed and styled by Sinem Erkas at The Russian Club studios.
